Personal Colour Analysis and the Munsell Colour Order System

Personal Colour Analysis (PCA) is a process of measuring your natural colouring. With carefully selected set of drapes an analyst identifies colours that are already present in your pigmentation. These colours are translated into a palette that, when repeated in clothing and makeup, harmonises with you in the most beautiful way.

PCA is a pure science as all the colour drapes used in in the process are fine mathematical tools that measure the colour dimensions of a client’s face. This wouldn’t be possible without the internationally accepted Munsell colour-order system.

Professor Albert H. Munsell, an artist and art teacher, developed the basic principles of his colour order system mainly for the purpose of bringing order to the study of colour. Munsell wanted the study of colour to be similar to the study of music, which had order so that one could “hear” how a composition would sound by reading the notes. Likewise, Munsell wanted one to “see” colour based on its three-dimensional attributes of hue, value and chroma.

Munsell’s discovery of the three-dimensional aspect of colour offered the order Munsell was looking for not only in terms of each individual colour, but also each colour’s relationship to other colours. (For more information - https://munsell.com/color-blog/color-tree/).

Three Colour Dimensions according the Munsell® Colour System

In Personal Colour Analysis with Style Identity, I refer to the following 12 Colour Types or 12 Seasons: Bright/Clear Spring, Warm/True Spring, Light Spring, Light Summer, Cool/True Summer, Soft Summer, Soft Autumn, Warm/True Autumn, Deep/Dark Autumn, Deep/Dark Winter, Cool/True Winter, Bright/Clear Winter.

12 Colour Types

Each of the 12 Seasons differentiates itself from the others by its specific combination of the three variables (hue, value and chroma).

For example, if a client’s Season (Colour Type) is a Cool/True Winter, then the colour dimensions of his/her face as well as his/her ideal colour palette are depicted in the chart below. Cool/True Winter’s hue is absolutely cool, value ranges from medium to dark and chroma is relatively bright but not absolutely bright.

Where is your position on each spectrum of the three colour dimensions?

During a Personal Colour Analysis session with Style Identity you will have an absolutely unique and life changing experience. You will carefully observe in the mirror the effects different colours have on your face. Drapes that represent different combinations of the three dimensions of colour will be placed under your face and compared to each other. You will see how great your face looks in the colours that share the dimensions of your face. You will also see what happens to your face when wearing drapes with colour dimensions that do not harmonize with you. The experience is mindblowing as well as calming and reassuring. You will see what you are and what you are not. You will find joy, peace and confidence when it comes to your colour choices. From now until forever.
