Colours: Grey

Have you ever heard anyone say: “My absolute favourite colour is grey”? I haven’t (yet), however, it is one of the most frequent colours I see people wear. I bet you have some grey items in your wardrobe too! Grey is easily accessible in stores and many people assume that they can do no wrong if they choose to wear grey. Well, as usual, this article will show the differences between greys for the 12 Colour Types. While there is a flattering shade of grey for every human on the planet, not all shades of grey are the same and not all of them will flatter your skin tone.

In the “Colour” series on this blog we have already explored the different shades of red, green, orange, pink, yellow and violet. Today, let’s focus on the colour grey.

Summer Colour Types are the kings and queens of grey. Their colour palettes are quite rich in cool, muted grey tones. Summer greys can also be blue, blue-green or taupe based. If you are one of the Summer Colour Types, your wardrobe probably includes a lot of grey neutrals. Winters also have some strong grey options, particularly charcoal grey as well as pure medium grey. Grey for Autumn and Spring Colour Types is visibly warmer in hue compared to the Summer and Winter greys. Spring Colour Types look stunning in grey that contains lots of yellow, i.e. yellow grey or camel grey. Autumn Colour Types’ grey has brown or green or khaki undertones, such as greige, deep muted grey-green or brown-grey.

Overall, there is a shade of grey for every single Colour Type. Isn’t that wonderful? Do you like the colour grey? While I do not particularly recommend wearing grey head-to-toe on a day-to-day basis due to the psychology of colour, grey is a versatile neutral colour that can be combined effortlessly with your flattering accent colours.

The objective of this article is to increase readers’ sensibility to the 3 dimensions of colour (hue, value and chroma). The more you see the differences between the different shades of the same colour, the more selective you will become when choosing colours that flatter your complexion, your eyes, your lips and your hair colour. With each photograph, I will indicate the Colour Type (i.e. the code name for a specific combination of the 3 colour dimensions) the shade belongs to. The photographs are in no particular order.
